ABOUT

WAY TO BE

WAY TO BE is a school incursion designed to build self awareness and communication skills for high school students in order to foster healthy interdependent relationships and improve self efficacy.

WHY

Our internet search histories reveal that, "Australians make more searches, looking for help with anxiety, than anyone else in the world."  These high rates of anxiety include our children!  In 2015 the Australian Government conducted the second Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing. They found that approximately 3.2 kids in the standard 23 student classroom were reported to have struggled with mental health.

If you're a teacher, that's YOUR CLASSROOM.

While we can't control all of the pressures on our students, we can give them the skills to cope!

WHAT

Created by experts in behaviour change and facilitation, WAY TO BE teaches soft skills with a difference.

Designed for high school students, the key learning points are multi disciplinary, making the content more accessible to this age group. While the learning outcomes are rooted in psychology and the social sciences, we approach the study of the human condition through the arts.

There are three stages in the WAY TO BE program, each stage consists of two sessions -

KEYNOTE:

The keynotes are designed to use humour, stories and activities to build knowledge and introduce the skills needed in each stage.

WORKSHOP:

The workshops are interactive, scattered with games and activities. They focus on the application of the skills needed in each stage.

This module focuses on identity.  Identity plays a crucial role in how we think, feel and behave.

In these workshops we cover the ways we define who we are; highlighting that identity is fluid and self acceptance is crucial.

With an emphasis on the importance of defining our own identity, we equip students with tools to do this so that they don't just accept the definitions cast on them by society.

We've all found ourselves unsatisfied when we are on auto-pilot, muscling our way through a plan we're not even sure we ever wanted.

This second module focuses on self-awareness. In these workshops we reveal that, although uncomfortable, awareness results in conscious decisions and more opportunities.

We show the students how to take personal responsibility for raising their awareness so that they can own their choices.

The third module focuses on communication. Paired with identity and awareness, communication skills foster healthy interdependent relationships and improve self efficacy.

In these workshops we share our greatest secret - seeking to understand instead of trying to be understood gets you closer to the things you want.

We highlight the difference between reacting and responding, encouraging students to stay open.

Rejection is a certain part of life. Staying open despite rejection turns failure into progress!
